From the Huffington Post (April 6,2011): Peace Corps Placement Is Like Flying Standby
Hello Daisie! I have recently been invited by Peace Corps to serve in Mexico in the Environment sector, and I was curious to hear about your volunteer experience! Should I feel safe working in Mexico as a single, 22y/o, blonde, blue-eyed female? I am so excited to start my service, and I am curious if you ever felt unsafe throughout the duration of your experience.
Hi Lauren! Congratulations
Peace Corps Mexico does everything it can to keep you safe…having said that, I felt as safe as I do in any new place. I lived in a big city so I had a different experience than you may but in general, yes its safe but you have to be cautious at the same time. You will not be located near any of the narco activity you hear about on the news but as a blond blue eyed girl you will get heckeled a little. Even I (brown hair and brown eyes) was called blondie and gringa…after a while you just blow it off and laugh about it. I would even tease them back. The key to being safe is getting to know your community, don’t go out drinking super late by your self etc…typical safety steps for young women. There have been a lot of young women in the group and the few times that they felt unsafe they were moved to different sites. If you ever feel unsafe just talk to the PC Duty Officer about it and I am sure they will help. Good luck with your service! You will LOVE Mexico
